NPS stands firm as it announced the purchase of agricultural produce nationwide to supply fuels to biomass power plants, an activity that has been ongoing for 3 decades, generating income to agriculturists of over 3 billion Baht per year, while also alleviating PM 2.5 dust particle issues from combustion in plantation areas.
Mr. Yothin Dumnernchanvanit, President, National Power Supply PCL or NPS, revealed that over the past 3 decades, NPS has been purchasing agricultural produce such as treetops, sticks, coconut shells, palm bunches, sugarcane leaves, tree roots, etc. from agriculturists with the intention to create new values as fuels for NPS biomass power plants’ electricity generation, amounting to more than 2.5 million tons per year, generating income for agriculturists of over 3 billion Baht per year. Recently, NPS has also purchased tree roots from agriculturists, along with the plan to purchase rice straws and corn cobs in the upcoming harvest season, serving another income source for agriculturists. More importantly, this has helped reduce combustion in plantation areas, which constitutes air pollution, especially PM 2.5 dust particles that are currently a national crisis.
“NPS has an experience in managing biomass power plants for over 33 years, with the use of BFB (Bubbling Fluidized Bed) boiler technology, which is capable of utilizing a variety of biomass fuels. We are therefore able to purchase almost all kinds of agricultural produce, for instance, chopped woods, tree barks, wood scraps, husks, tree roots, etc., an advantage that NPS takes pride in for being able to maximizing the use of the whole trees as electricity generation fuels, especially the roots that NPS has developed the chopping technology that feeding the materials into the electricity generation procedure. This has also helped to reduce the burden of disposal of unwanted roots and increasing additional value for agriculturists to sell this product as fuels.”
Furthermore, NPS also has purchase points for agricultural produce distributed in different areas, together with the logistic management system, effective fuel transportation via NGV trucks and EV trucks, allowing agriculturists nationwide to bring their produce for sales conveniently throughout the year, reducing the burden for farmers and agriculturists for not having to burn down the produce in their plantations. This not only benefits in terms of the PM 2.5 reduction, but also helps generate extra income for agriculturists”, stated Mr. Yothin.
